Endless secrecy – conspiratorial flats and official buildings

Full-time officers and unofficial personnel used conspiratorial (secret) flats and buildings for their meetings. Most of them were in the city centre, others spread over the suburbs of Leipzig (see map). All in all the Leipzig district contained more than 600 conspiratorial flats and buildings, which were of course kept top secret. The “Runde Ecke” was an official building of the Stasi. In addition Leipzig also had numerous official Stasi premises, including recreational facilities, a guest-house and even a shooting range.

One conspiratorial site of particular interest is the Stasi bunker in the nearby town of Machern, which was to serve as the emergency command centre of the Stasi for the district of Leipzig. The commander would have continued his work from the bunker in the event of a war. Now a museum, it can be visited on the last weekend of every month between 1pm and 4pm.
